《西南聯大英文課》譯文賞析 (白立平)

西南聯大雖誕生於烽火連天的歲月,卻在各個學科為國家培養了大批棟樑之材。其教育理念重在培養博雅之士,當時編撰的英文教材《西南聯大英文課》正是這一理念的體現。此書原為一九三七至一九四六年間全校必修之大一英文教材,由外文系主任陳福田編選,共有四十餘篇課文,涵蓋小說、散文、論說文等體裁,涉及文學、哲學、政治學等諸多領域,篇篇皆出自諸如賽珍珠、毛姆、羅素等名家之手。八十年後,這冊教材經羅選民教授(圖)等學者翻譯,以雙語對照形式重現讀者面前,先後於二○一七年、二○二二年分別由中譯出版社與香港中和出版有限公司出版。羅選民教授是著名翻譯學學者,清華大學二級教授,現任廣西大學君武學者講席教授,其譯文準確傳神,與原文相得益彰,從以下兩段譯文就可窺見一斑:

You hear it all along the river. You hear it, loud and strong, from the rowers as they urge the junk with its high stern, the mast lashed alongside, down the swift running stream. You hear it from the trackers, a more breathless chaunt, as they pull desperately against the current, half a dozen of them perhaps if they are taking up a wupan, a couple of hundred if they are hauling a splendid junk, its square sail set, over a rapid. On the junk, a man stands amidships beating a drum incessantly to guide their efforts, and they pull with all their strength, like men possessed, bent double; and sometimes in the extremity of their travail they crawl on the ground, on all fours, like the beasts of the field. 

沿着河流一路都可以聽到這歌聲。這是槳手的歌聲,響亮有力。他們奮力地划着木船,順急流而下,船尾翹得老高,桅杆猛烈地擺動。這是縴夫的號子聲,他們在拚盡全力逆流拉船時,聲音會更加急促,讓人透不過氣來。如果拉的是五板船,那可能有幾個人;如果拉的是揚着橫帆的華麗大木船過急流,那就得有幾百人。船中央站着一個漢子不停地擊鼓,給他們助威,讓他們使勁。於是縴夫們使出渾身氣力,就像被魔咒驅使般,腰彎成了九十度。有時在極度費力的情況下,他們就全身趴地匍匐前進,像地裏的牲口。

這段文字出自毛姆(W. Somerset Maugham)的"The Song of the River"(〈河之歌〉)一文,為第三篇課文。這段譯文精妙地完成了文學翻譯的再造之功。譯者並未拘泥於英文的句法結構,而是以中文的氣韻為脈絡進行了創造性重組:將原文綿密的聽覺意象(You hear it...)轉化為視覺與動覺交融的畫面,通過「奮力地划」、「拚盡全力逆流拉」、「使出渾身氣力」、「腰彎成了九十度」、「全身趴地匍匐前進」等富於肌理感的動詞鏈,使縴夫勞動時的形象躍然紙上。在文化意象轉換上,將「like men possessed」譯為「像被魔咒驅使般」,既保留原比喻的張力,又暗合東方民俗中的神秘色彩。譯文節奏張弛有度,四字格與長短句交錯,既再現了鼓點與號子的節奏,亦在「歸化」與「異化」之間取得平衡。

    再看下一段譯文:

What is liberty? You say of the locomotive that it runs free. What do you mean? You mean that its parts are so assembled and adjusted that friction is reduced to a minimum, and that it has perfect adjustment. We say of a boat skimming the water with light foot, "How free she runs,"when we mean, how perfectly she is adjusted to the force of the wind, how perfectly she obeys the great breath out of the heavens that fills her sails. Throw her head up into the wind and see how she will halt and stagger, how every sheet will shiver and her whole frame will   be shaken, how instantly she is "in irons," in the expressive phrase of the sea. She is free only when you have let her fall off again and have recovered once more her nice adjustment to the forces she must obey and cannot defy.

何為自由?有人說就好比火車,它能夠自由疾馳。什麼意思呢?就是說火車所有零件經過最優組合、調整後,其間的摩擦力會降至最小,進而實現完美配置,所以能夠自由飛馳。又有人說就好比帆船,常言道:船行水面猶如凌波微步,「看它乘風破浪,多麼暢行自由啊!」也就是說,船能完美地借用風力,與上蒼之息協同一致,進而揚帆遠航。當逆風而行時,船時而蹣跚難行,時而搖曳在風中,船的每一塊材料都在顫抖,船體本身也被撼動,隨時都會被風所困。只有鬆動風帆,她能再次與無法抗爭的外力協同一致,這時她才算是自由了。

這段文字出自第十二篇課文"Liberty" (〈論自由〉),出自伍德羅 · 威爾遜(Woodrow Wilson)所著《新自由》(The New Freedom)一書。作者在此闡述了對自由的看法,認為自由並非完全無拘無束,而是與不可抗拒之力達成最佳平衡後所獲得的真正自由。羅選民教授在準確傳達原文意思時,並未拘泥於原文的形式與字面意思,譯文流暢自然優美,毫無生硬牽強之痕。比如在處理原文中的「a boat skimming the water with light foot」時,譯者化用成語「凌波微步」,既承古典詩意(曹植《洛神賦》),又契合輕舟疾行之態。航海術語「in irons」本指帆船迎風失速、無法轉向的困境,譯者捨棄字面直譯(如「受鐵鍊束縛」),並沒有翻譯原文的「in the expressive phrase of the sea」,而是以「被風所困」點出其困局,既準確傳達航行情境,亦呼應前文的「乘風破浪」。此外,「自由疾馳」、「完美配置」、「協同一致」、「揚帆遠航」、「蹣跚難行」等四字詞,讀來朗朗上口,賦予譯文靈動之感。

如果說翻譯是帶着鐐銬跳舞,羅選民教授的譯文展現出了優雅嫻熟、游刃有餘的「舞技」。其譯文折射出譯者堅實的翻譯功力和深厚的文學造詣,達至了翻譯的「自由」之境。如果套用威爾遜的話,那是與不可抗拒之力—這種不可抗拒之力在翻譯中表現為譯者無法完全擺脫的原文約束—達成最佳平衡後所呈現的自由,又如孔子所說的雖從心所欲又不逾矩的境界。可以說,再版的《西南聯大英文課》今天依然可以給讀者以感悟和啟迪,羅選民教授的譯文更是可供研習的範例。
